Cyclone Chalane is reaching Mozambique, where it should make landfall in the early hours of December 30. Landfall is predicted to take place near Dondo and Beira.

The system is moving west with sustainable winds of 111 km/h (60 kt). Chalane brings a threat of heavy rains, flooding and strong winds in provinces of Sofala, Manica, Zambezia and Inhambane.

In the evening of December 30, Chalane should enter Zimbabwe, bringing rains, which could result into flash flooding, mudslides and landslides.

Update: Saturday 28th of December, 10:00 p.m.

Cyclone Chalane, located at 20.0S 41.6E, has regained a tropical storm intensity as it continues to head towards Mozambique.

Landfall should occur on Wednesday in central Mozambique, in the province of Sofala. Heavy rainfall could be expected in provinces of Sofala, Manica, Zambezia and Inhambane.

Maximum winds are 74 km/h (40 kt) and the intensification of the storm is likely to continue.

Update: Saturday 27th of December, 11:00 p.m.

Tropical cyclone Chalane has made a landfall over Madagascar today Dec 27, causing massive flooding and deaths of several people.

Cyclone is currently near 19.2S 45.6E with maximum sustainable winds of 55 km/h (30 kt) and higher gusts.

Chalane will continue to move westward, towards the coast of Mozambique and should re-intensify to peak winds of 75 km/h. Landfall is predicted to be near Beira.
