Following its hottest spring on record, Alaska, the US state part of which lies inside the Arctic Circle, experienced its hottest June on record.
In Anchorage, temperatures broke new record of 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32.2 degrees Celsius) on Thursday, decimating the previous all-time record for the city of 85°F / 29.4°C in 1969.
According to the National Weather Service, the new 90°F record temperature was recorded at Anchorage's airport at 17:00 on Thursday (01:00 Friday GMT).
It doesn't end with Anchorage, few more high temperature records were set at official observation sites throughout Southern Alaska on 4 July 2019.
- Homer: 78°F / 25.6°C (previous record of 71°F / 21.7°C in 2018)
- Gulkama: 88°F / 31.1°C (previous record of 86°F / 30°C in 1958)
- Anchorage: Merrill Field: 90°F / 32.2°C (previous record of 77°F / 25°C in 1999)
- Illiamna: 86°F / 30°C (previous record of 79°F / 26.1°C in 1949)

Record-breaking heatwave leads to increased wildfires in Alaska. AccuWeather reported that 634,000 acres in Alaska have been burned by fires this year, in comparison of about 411,000 acres in all of 2018.
